The social network TikTok recently announced the implementation of an automatic detection system for content generated by artificial intelligence (AI) on its platform. This aims to avoid any confusion or deception of users, as stated by the company in a press release distributed on Thursday, May 9.
AI offers endless creative possibilities, but it can also create confusion if users are not informed that content has been created by artificial intelligence, explains the company. This initiative therefore aims to ensure the authenticity of content broadcast on the platform.
Since the emergence of so-called « generative » AI interfaces, allowing the production of text, images, and videos on demand in everyday language, the issue of content authenticity has become crucial on the internet. This phenomenon risks exacerbating issues related to deepfakes, falsified creations depicting fictional events.
Aware of these issues, TikTok has decided to affix a specific label to content created by AI when uploaded from certain platforms. This approach aims to ensure the necessary transparency for users, highlights Adam Presser, operations manager at TikTok.
Other major industry players, such as OpenAI, Adobe, Microsoft, and Google, have already implemented automatic labeling systems for content generated by AI. TikTok has also joined various initiatives aimed at promoting transparency and authenticity of content, such as the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) and the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI).
Simultaneously, TikTok plans to disseminate educational videos to explain its approach and raise awareness among users about the importance of discerning what is true in a digital environment where content manipulation is increasingly widespread.
This TikTok initiative comes at a time when trust and transparency are becoming major issues for digital platforms that leverage artificial intelligence. This highlights the need to put in place mechanisms that allow users to distinguish authentic content from creations manipulated by algorithms.
In conclusion, TikTok’s initiative to automatically flag AI-generated content is an important step towards greater transparency and combating the spread of fake news and misleading content on social media.
